NewsBrother shoots sister in gang-related altercation By James Pluta Justice police and a team of outside investigators probing a gang-related shooting involving a 16-year-old boy and his 19-year-old sister are expecting to make another arrest in the case as soon as next week. Police Chief Robert Gedville said officers responded to a report of shots fired at a house at 7529 Garden Lane at 10:41 p.m. Jan. 27 and upon arrival learned a 19-year-old Bridgeview woman had been shot once in the lower back by her younger brother as she was driving to a condominium where the brother and their mother live together at 15 Ottawa Court. The shooting, said Gedville, appeared to be related to an earlier domestic disturbance between the offender and his mother, 37-year-old Deena Lee, who was just charged Feb. 3 with possession of a firearm without a requisite firearm owners identification card for the .25 caliber semiautomatic weapon police recovered in a bedroom in a warrant search of her home. Lee, who refused to allow investigators to search her home immediately following the shooting of her daughter as the victim was being transported to Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital for treatment, had her FOID card revoked due to a prior reckless conduct charge last year, also in Justice. A .357 magnum revolver believed used in the shooting — during which the offender allegedly fired the gun multiple times at the vehicle, hitting the nearby house once a half-block away — also was recovered, but the offender is still at large. The alleged gunman, who could be tried as an adult with attempted murder or aggravated battery with a firearm, has contacted authorities through an attorney and is expected to turn himself over to police in the forthcoming days, said Gedville — who is receiving assistance in the investigation by The Fifth District Rapid Response Team. The alleged shooter is a known street gang member, but his sister frequents with members of a rival gang. Other family members have been uncooperative with police. Gedville, who dispatched a community notification describing the incident to neighbors and other residents that night, said Justice residents should not be worried about their safety. “This is a generally quiet area and the case of a bad apple among the neighborhood,” he said. “This is an isolated incident involving a family we’ve had many issues with.” |
