Jeff Borgardt's Soundoff from Summit Column 10/20/05

•A scholarship fund has been set up in the name of Michael Pacek. The Argo student from Bridgeview, 15, recently died while playing soccer. The fund is being set up by Argo Community High School and Chicago Fire Works. The fund will be for the benefit of
bilingual students as Pacek was of Polish ancestry.
•Get out your fishing polls fall fisherman. Horsetail Lake at Willow Springs Road (104th Ave) and McCarthy Road (123rd St) has been
freshly stocked with 1,000 pounds of Rainbow Trout. The lake was closed Oct. 10 to Oct. 15 to allow the fresh fish to disperse.
•Phillip Kringlie, son of the Hodgkins police chief, has been assigned to a top pentagon post. Kringlie will be working at the Military Security Force for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The 1996 LT grad and his wife Renee (nee Richell) of Willow Springs now reside in Virgina.
•Tuesday at noon the Desplaines Valley News stopped working 20 minutes as we all tried to get White Sox World Series tickets with no success. Oh well, I’m a Cubs fan anyways.
•Politicians from Szczytno, Poland arrived in Bridgeview last week.
The northeast Polish town is the sister city of Bridgeview. The pols included the towns mayor and the provinces lieutenant governor.
•Home heating prices are expected to rise by about 70 percent this winter.
•I recommend the movie “Lord of War” with Nicholas Cage. It tells the story of an international arms dealer and his relationship with a North African warlord with style and substance. Thumbs up. I’m also looking forward to the Oct. 28 Chicago opening of “Good
Night and Good Luck.” The George Clooney flick tells the story of legendary TV newsman Edward R. Murrow.
•Former Desplaines Valley News reporter Catherina Wojtowicz is volunteering with Congressman Dan Lipinski to organize a Hurricane Katrina relief effort. An event was held Oct. 20 to help package all the donations which will then be trucked to Ocean
Springs east of Biloxi.
•Signature collection for the March, 2006 primary election has begun. Congressmen, the governor, lt. governor, attorney general, secretary of state, comptroller, state treasurer, some state
senators, all state representatives, county president, county commissioners, county clerk, county treasurer and county sheriff will be among those on the ballot.
•State Rep. Eileen Lyons hosted a party for Jim Durkin where he announced his candidacy for the 82nd district. The announcement party was held Oct. 15 at Palmer Place in La Grange.
•Police conducted a five-day study of truck traffic on La Grange Road recently. During a five day study, a La Grange police officer observed 777 non-passenger vehicles on the roadway. Of these, 554 were trucks and 223 were gravel haulers.
•I heard some international lawyers talking on TV about the possibility of Saddam Hussein being found not-guilty after his trial began Tuesday. They said the case against him focuses on a 1982 attack against Iraq rebel territory as U.S. weapons and policy
officially supported Saddam in a bloody war of attrition against Iran. Luckily, there are no statues of limitations for crimes against humanity.
•Route 66, which flows through Countryside as Joliet Road, has been designated a national historic byway which could trigger more tourism cash. The historic road is considered the second largest tourist attraction in the state.
