Increasing
TIF districts irk school districts
TIF districts have been on
the rise since their inception in the 70’s. Local villages have adapted TIFs as a source for economic growth and development but the increased use of these has continued to put a strain on local school districts. A TIF is an economic tool that is used to develop blighted areas in a community. These areas include sections of a village that do not generate tax revenue or are underperforming. Unfortunately, TIFs have become controversial. |

The Natural seeks liquor license approval
The liquor license for The Natural located
at 6535 Joliet Rd. was scheduled to be discussed at Countryside’s
meeting on December 13. There was no word on whether the bar would be approved or if it would meet the same fate as Tooters Bar and Grill. City Administrator Ed Bailey said that he did not like to speculate whether the bar’s petition for a liquor license would receive approval from the city council or not. |
Holidays generate helping hand The holidays usually bring the best out of people. That is why Helping Hand, a local organization that provides services for adults and children with developmental disabilities, sent out its annual appeal to the 5,000 members of its mailing list. Sue Tutt-Parsons, Senior Development Consultant, said that the organization received a response from the West Suburban Chamber of Commerce with the donation of 8 computers for Helping Hand’s computer lab. |

Duckworth appointed director of DVA
Building on his commitment to recognize
the efforts of
Illinois veterans and provide them with the services and benefits they have bravely earned, Governor Rod R. Blagojevich today appointed decorated Iraqi war veteran and experienced health advocate Tammy Duckworth as the new Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs (IDVA). Duckworth’s appointment is effective December 15, and requires State Senate confirmation. The Governor also thanked outgoing IDVA Director Roy L. Dolgos for his hard work serving the state’s veterans. |
United Party
of Justice announces candidates
At a
special caucus of the United Party of Justice on November 22, a slate of
candidates was elected to run on the Party ticket in the upcoming
municipal elections. “It is our pleasure to congratulate all of our candidates slated for public office in the next election,” said James Lurquin, Chairman of the United Party of Justice. “The candidates will bring stability and fresh ideas to the Village Board. |

Timber
Trails developer's request rejected
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has rejected Western
Springs One LLC in their bid to receive a no further remediation letter. The development company which is looking to develop the old Timber Trails golf course submitted a report on two sections of their development to gain approval from the IEPA. |
Justice man charged with extortion
Justice
resident Omar Abbas, 40, was charged earlier this week with extortion
for posing as a law enforcement official and preying on members of the
immigrant community. |

Bedford Park settles suit
The Village of Bedford Park avoided a possible seven figure judgment by
approving a license that will bring an adult entertainment facility to
the village. Mayor Dave Brady said that the board approved the license last week in a
special meeting on Monday Nov. 13. Brady said that CSWS LLC, which filed a lawsuit two years ago to open the business, has dropped the suit. |
4 a.m. bar closed
Countryside Mayor Carl LeGant said that his concerns are with the
residents of his city not the 4 a.m. bar he managed to close. The Natural at 6535 Joliet Rd. was just down the road from Tooter’s, an infamous 4 a.m. bar in unincorporated Cook County that gave LeGant big headaches and was torn down last month. |

Referendum Redux
The referendum that banned term limits in
Lyons failed to pass by a good margin but Village President David Visk
said that the term limits are unconstitutional. Visk said that the term limits set for the President of the United States are different because the positions face different challenges. |

Bedford Park to discuss TIF
amendment
Bedford Park continues to see tax increment finance districts as the
solution for development. According to Village President Dave Brady “TIFs have been excellent.” Brady said that tax breaks have done wonders for the village and that he’s happy for the way TIFs have worked out for the village. |
Village discusses referendum The village of Willow Springs held their regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday Nov. 9. Mayor Alan Nowaczyk spoke about the tax referendum which failed to pass by a vote of 416 yes against 1,315 no votes. No future plans were given. Mayor Nowaczyk said that there would be another town meeting to discuss the financial situation and let residents know where the money shortfalls came from and why they occurred. | |||

Election
wrap-up Last week voters were asked to ban assault weapons in Cook County, raise the minimum wage and bring home the troops from Iraq. All three referenda were approved by county voters but some local villages also looked to voters for help. |
