Hearing about
the death of an old friend is always a difficult experience. Hearing of the
sudden death of Elmer Johnson, former publisher of the Brookfield Enterprise
and the Lyons and Valley Times and my former boss for 21 years, left me not
only sad but steeped in memories of the good old days spent in Brookfield,
Lyons and finally Willow Springs where we departed company. |

Help! Did I
actually say I felt I was auditioning for hell because of the intense heat? |

Watching old movies, one can’t help but notice the change in women’s appearance over the years. Men have stayed pretty much the same with the disappearance of hats and addition of more casual apparel, both a plus. |

It has been four decades since I covered Desplaines Valley Village board meetings and police news. When I began making the rounds in 1961, Summit, Willow Springs, McCook, Justice, Hickory Hills, Brookfield, Countryside and Lyons were headed by colorful, friendly and charismatic mayors who left their stamp on village improvements and did so
