NewsEighth-graders win Brookfield census slogan contestBy James Pluta Brookfield officials are hoping residents will be attracted in the coming months to the slogans “Hey Brookfield! Count Me In!” or “The Census of 2010: Where Everyone Counts” as they try to determine just how many people now reside in the village. The marketing of the every-decade population headcount is being boosted thanks to the creative minds of eighth-graders Dominic Bongiorno of S.E. Gross Middle School in Brookfield and Elizabeth Lattyak of St. Louise De Marillac School in La Grange Park. Both students are Brookfield residents and both were recognized last month by the Brookfield Village Board for first and second place in the slogan contest, respectively. Dominic earned a $100 savings bond for his first place “Count Me In” phrase and Elizabeth earned a $50 savings bond for hers. They were among 43 area schoolchildren to enter the contest. The prizes were awarded courtesy of the Brookfield Chamber of Commerce. Dominic’s slogan will be featured on all census promotional materials. Village Trustee Cathy Colgrass Edwards, head of the village census committee, said the contest was a way to promote the census and increase participation among residents. Although the second place slogan will not be used, it will be announced on the village website and other communications. |
